Would the 1970s be the same without that iconic opening lyric: “Jeremiah was a bullfrog. Was a good friend of mine?” Not even close.
That song, “Joy to the World,” was a No. 1 hit for the classic rock group Three Dog Night, whose members at the time thought of it as silly. Three Dog Night, formed in 1967 by Chuck Negron, Cory Wells and Danny Hutton, had 21 Top 40 hits from 1969 to 1975. In addition to “Joy to the World,” the group is best known for “One,” “An Old-Fashioned Love Song,” “Shambala” and “Mama Told Me (Not to Come).”
The group, featuring founder Hutton and new members, is currently on tour and will perform in Dothan and Mobile in August.

Now about that name: What does it mean? According to the LA Times, the name was the idea of Danny Hutton’s then-girlfriend June Fairchild. “She is said to have suggested the group’s name after reading that Australian aborigines gauged the coldness of a night by the number of dogs they had to curl up with to stay warm.” A very cold night was a “three dog night.”
