ALABAMA (WHNT) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled Diamond Shruumz, a mushroom-based product brand, due to severe cases of illnesses being reported in several states, including Alabama.
Since June 11, Diamond Shruumz products, including chocolates, gummies and infused cones, have been linked to 39 illnesses and 23 hospitalizations nationwide. Several patients have required intubation, mechanical ventilation and admission to an intensive care unit.
The FDA recall notice says that the illnesses are likely caused by Muscimol, a chemical that is found in mushrooms.
According to the FDA, consumers who have eaten the products have experienced:
- seizures
- agitation
- involuntary muscle contractions
- loss of consciousness
- confusion
- sleepiness
- nausea/vomiting
- abnormal heart rates
- hyper/hypotension
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that products containing mushrooms have often been marketed for boosting health, energy and focus. Advertising for these products implies that eating them “would lead to feelings of euphoria, hallucinations, or psychedelic effects.”
Even with labels that have the term ‘microdosing,’ the Diamond Shruumz website states that its products contain lion’s mane and ashwagandha and do not contain any psychedelic substances.
The FDA recommends that consumers stop the use of Diamond Shruumz products immediately and destroy them.
Consumers need to contact Prophet Premium Blends at (209) 314-0881 or email info@diamondshruumz.com with their order information to receive a full refund.
