East Alabama man killed when pickup truck left road, hit ditch and tree

A weekend crash in east Alabama left one person dead.

Alabama State Troopers identified the fatality victim as Mark J. Howell. He was 66 and lived in Hokes Bluff.

The wreck happened at 4:18 p.m. Sunday on Alabama 9, about seven miles south of Piedmont in Calhoun County.

Senior Trooper Vu Quang said Howell was driving a Ford F-150 that left the road, struck a ditch and then hit a tree.

Howell was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash, Quang said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The single-vehicle crash remains under investigation.
