Former Lee County school custodian arrested for allegedly showing students sexual photos

A former custodian at a Lee County middle school was arrested Friday for reportedly showing inappropriate photos to students.

Sheriff Jay Jones said Lee County Sheriff’s Office school resource officers in November 2023 received two reports of a custodian at Sanford Middle School in the Beauregard community making sexual comments and showing inappropriate sexual photos to students.

The suspect was identified as 32-year-old Joseph L. Walker Jr.

Lee County investigators were notified and were able to confirm the allegations, the sheriff said.

School officials immediately placed Walker on administrative leave, and he resigned a short time later before the school board could meet to discuss the allegations further.

The case was presented to a Lee County Grand Jury in July of 2024 where Walker was indicted on two counts of school employee distributing obscene material to a student which is a Class A misdemeanor.

Walker was taken into custody Friday at his Opelika home. He was booked into the Lee County Jail and released after posting a $600 bond.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651.
