Green Bay Packers sign former Troy cornerback, release ex-Montgomery prep standout

Former Troy cornerback Don Callis signed with the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday as he joined the NFL team at training camp.

A transfer from NCAA Division II East Central, Callis played one season in the Troy secondary. He attended the Packers’ rookie minicamp in May but was not offered a contract at that time.

In a corresponding roster move on Tuesday, Green Bay released cornerback Zyon Gilbert, a former prep standout at Jeff Davis (now J.A.G.) in Montgomery.

A second-team All-State selection in 2015 and first-team All-State selection in 2016, Gilbert entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie from Florida International in 2022.

Gilbert played in three games, with one start, and recorded 14 tackles and one sack for the New York Giants as a rookie.

In 2023, Gilbert sustained a hamstring injury during the preseason, and the Giants waived him from injured reserve on Aug. 31.

Gilbert signed with the Packers’ practice squad on Oct. 25, but he did not appear in a regular-season game last season.

Gilbert re-signed with Green Bay on Jan. 22.
