Legendary rock band retiring from touring: ‘You’ve made our dreams come true’

Aerosmith will no longer tour.

The Boston-based rock legends, who formed in 1970, announced via social media platforms like X/Twitter and Facebook, that they will retire from the touring stage because a full recovery from Steven Tyler’s lingering vocal injury “is not possible.”

“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other,” the post said. “He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”

The band thanked their fans, noting their name the “Blue Army,” for support spanning five decades. “Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history,” the post said. “It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours. In every club, on every massive tour and at moments grand and private you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.

“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing.”

They thanked fans for joining them on tour and also thanked their crew and others who have worked with them for years.

“We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time,” the post said. “Grateful to our expert crew, our incredible team and the thousands of talented people who’ve made our historic runs possible. A final thank you to you – the best fans on planet Earth.

“Play our music loud, now and always. Dream On. You’ve made our dreams come true.”

In April 2024, Aerosmith announced plans to return to the road with the “Peace Out” farewell tour with special guests The Black Crowes and (in a one-night-only performance) Teddy Swims.

The band’s social post said those who purchased tickets via Ticketmaster for shows on the tour would be automatically refunded. “For those who purchased via third-party resale sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub, VividSeats, etc. – please reach out to your point of purchase for more details.*he band announced via social media platforms like X/Twitter and Facebook,” the post said.

In 2023, the band postponed tour dates after Tyler injured his vocal cords during a performance, per The Associated Press.

Aerosmith formed in Boston in 1970. The group consists of Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass), Joey Kramer (drums), and Brad Whitford (guitar).

“I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next thirty days,” Tyler, 75, posted on Instagram. “I sustained vocal cord damage during Saturday’s show that led to subsequent bleeding. We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.”

They are widely considered one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. They debuted with a self-titled album in 1973, followed by the records “Get Your Wings,” “Toys in the Attic,” “Rocks,” “Draw the Line” and “Night in the Ruts” during the 1970s, and had hits like “Sweet Emotion,” “Dream On” and “Walk This Way.”

They reached newfound fame in the rock world during the 1980s thanks to the 1986 collaboration with popular rap group Run-D.M.C. on the remake of their song “Walk This Way,” plus the band’s album “Permanent Vacation.”

Other hit albums would include “Pump,” “Get a Grip” and “Nine Lives.” Chart-topping singles included “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” “Angel,” “Rag Doll,” “Love in an Elevator,” “Janie’s Got a Gun,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Cryin’,” and “Crazy.”

The band has sold more than 150 million records worldwide. They’ve had 21 top 40 hits on the US Hot 100 chart. They also won four Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, and 10 MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, while Tyler and Perry were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
