Man gunned down inside vehicle in Birmingham’s College Hills neighborhood

A man was gunned down inside his vehicle in Birmingham’s College Hills neighborhood.

North Precinct officers were dispatched about 9 p.m. Tuesday to shots fired in the 700 block of Eighth Terrace West, just off Arkadelphia Road.

When police arrived, they were led to the parking lot of a small apartment building, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Investigators believe the victim was targeted. He either lived in the area or had family or friends there that he was visiting.

“We believe whoever did this knew who they were looking for and exactly what they wanted to do,’’ Fitzgerald said.

A small crowd of family and friends quickly arrived at the crime scene awaiting word about their loved one.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office was en route to the scene, and would “make that horrible notification,’’ Fitzgerald said.

No arrests have been made and a motive was not yet uncovered.

The victim is Birmingham’s 69th homicide this year. Of those, seven have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 92 homicides, including the 69 in Birmingham.

Fitzgerald asked that anyone with information call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
