GRANT, Ala. (WHNT) — Marshall County Animal Control is still looking for three ‘wolf-dog hybrids’ that escaped from their pens in Grant.
Neighbor Debbie Kean says she was surrounded by the wolf-dog hybrids this morning in her yard while walking her dog.
“Those dogs could’ve attacked not just my dog but me too. I thought I was safe in the yard,” Kean said.
Kean claims she was quickly surrounded before two of them grabbed her chihuahua by the neck and started shaking him.
“One of them lunged forward and started shaking him back and forth… I kept peeking out to see if they were still there and they were,” Kean said. “He was still on the leash, so I scooped him up and ran like 15 feet… I thought they were killing him.”
Kean’s chihuahua was injured, but he is still alive.
She said the wolfdogs are owned by her neighbor and added that this isn’t the first time she’s seen them wandering the area unsupervised.
“I’ve seen them in my yard, but they were just running through. This is my first encounter with them in attack mode. I can’t even describe how scared I was.”
Animal control took custody of four wolfdogs. The owners and animal control are still searching for the remaining three.
Assistant Chief Deputy John Young told News 19 that they anticipate the remaining three dogs will return tonight to get dinner, as they only eat meat and not dog food.
“The owner will try to lure them in, hopefully get them in at dark, when it’s feeding time,” Young said. “The strategy is just wait. By now, there’s a lot of people looking for them.”
Young also tells us the owners are working to have the wolfdogs moved to a specialized shelter in Etowah County.
Wolf-dog hybrids are legal to own in the state of Alabama.
News 19 will keep you updated on air and online as the search continues for the missing wolfdogs.
