A Mobile man was sentenced to life in prison for shooting a police officer when he was a teenager.
Dujaune DuBose, 24, was 18 years old when he shot Mobile Police Officer Ben Towarnyckyj in the arm in 2018.
DuBose was charged with attempted murder. Authorities said he shot Towarnyckyj in the parking lot of a Walmart on Cottage Hill Road on Nov. 9, 2018. Towarnyckyj was investigating a report of a stolen car and approached DuBose, who was in the stolen vehicle.
Towarnyckyj sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
A Mobile County jury convicted DuBose on May 21, court records showed.
DuBose’s life sentence was not yet in online court records as of late Wednesday afternoon, but Fox 10 reported Mobile County Circuit Court Judge Ben Brooks issued the sentence.
Brooks also sentenced DuBose to 12 years for stealing the car that led to his encounter with Towarnyckyj, but would only serve on that count if he is paroled on the attempted murder charge, the station reported.
