Some Alabama Publix locations remove Boar’s Head meats from deli counters

Some Publix locations in Alabama have removed Boar’s Head meats from their deli counters following a recall in connection with a listeria outbreak.

Last week, Boar’s Head liverwurst and deli meats were recalled in connection with the outbreak, which has reportedly caused two deaths.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the recall of liverwurst as well as other meats that were produced on the same line and on the same day.

At the Publix in Rainbow City Tuesday, Boar’s Head meats have been pulled from the deli counter. A worker said it was a temporary measure. According to social media, similar steps were taken at Publix stores in Clay and Montclair Place in Birmingham.

A company spokesperson said Tuesday “a significant amount of Boar’s Head product” from one plant in question had been removed from the delis.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recommends retail delis clean and sanitize all food and non-food surfaces and discard any open meats and cheeses in the deli, according to an announcement on Publix’s website.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 34 people in 13 states have reported illnesses linked to the listeria oubreak, with two deaths.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. Serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur in older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
