17-year-old drowns at Bates Landing in Franklin County

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A 17-year-old drowned at Bates Landing in Phil Campbell on Saturday night.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), the teen was with friends at the time of the drowning. FCSO tells News 19 that the friends decided to swim to the other side of the water, however the 17-year-old stayed behind.

When the friends made it to the other side of the water, they didn’t see the 17-year-old anymore. Deputies said that the group then swam back and searched for the teen and after a few minutes called 911.

FCSO said that the teen’s body was found by divers near the area where the group had originally been swimming.

The 17-year-old was from Marion County.
