HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A ‘major’ expansion should be underway soon at the Huntsville Tennis Center.
City leaders approved a $4.6 billion construction contract with Chorba Contracting Corporation to renovate six courts and build 10 hard courts with lighting. The project will also include a small restroom pavilion, additional parking, sidewalks, landscaping and irrigation.
The City of Huntsville says the expansion will help meet the increased demand for tennis courts, as well as provide a significant upgrade to the facility located at John Hunt Park.
“We are pumped,” said Joc Simmons, Director of Tennis at the Tennis Center. “We’re full with tournaments in the evening, so this helps alleviate some of our overflow. We have to turn people away in the evening. This will help just being able to get everybody out on the court.”
Simmons added that the expansion will allow the HTC to bid on more tournaments and could bring as many as 500 players to Huntsville.
Construction is slated to take 16 months and when complete, the tennis center will offer 36 soft courts and 10 hard courts for both local and tournament play.
