Jeff Sessions, once mocked by Trump, says rally shooting won’t stop the ‘powerful leader’

Jeff Sessions, Alabama’s Republican former U.S. Senator who served as Attorney General under former President Donald Trump until the two had a public falling out, said Saturday his prayers are with Trump.

“President Trump is a powerful leader. He never waivers,” Sessions said.

“He is always out front. He is physically courageous, and he will not be intimidated from taking his case to the American people. You can be sure this won’t stop President Trump,” Sessions said.

“Americans of every party must condemn political violence. There must be no equivocation.”

In 2015, Trump, then a hopeful for the GOP nomination, and Sessions, then still a Senator, took the stage together in Mobile during a during a rally at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Sessions then became the first Senator to back the president’s 2016 campaign.

Sessions was one of the Trump campaign’s strategists on immigration in 2016 and his name was mentioned as a possible running mate for Trump before being named AG.

The relationship between the two soured, however, when Sessions recused himself from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, a move that enraged Trump.

In 2018, Sessions resigned as AG.

Trump said in a 2019 sit-down with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that appointing Sessions was his “biggest mistake.”

“I would say if I had one do-over, it would be, I would not have appointed Jeff Sessions to be attorney general,” Trump said.

When Sessions ran for U.S. Senator again in 2020, Trump instead endorsed Tommy Tuberville in the GOP primary runoff.

Trump even went so far as mocking Sessions’ second-place finish, tweeting: “This is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States & then doesn’t have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt. Recuses himself on FIRST DAY in office, and the Mueller Scam begins!”
