Christian Barmore treated for blood clots, no timetable for his return to the Patriots

Coming off a breakout season that earned a four-year, $83 million contract extension from the New England Patriots, former Alabama standout Christian Barmore was hospitalized this weekend.

“Over the weekend, Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots,” the NFL team said in a statement released on Sunday afternoon. “He was appropriately treated by the doctors at Mass General Brigham, who tested, evaluated and treated Christian. Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and wellbeing. Fortunately, Mass General Brigham provides some of the best health care in the world. While there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care, and we look forward to his full recovery.”

Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lynn, added to that statement via her X account: “I would be remiss if I did not thank the Patriots’ trainer, Jim Whalen, for his absolute diligence and care over the last couple of days. Today could have looked a lot different without Jim’s persistent and expertise.”

A defensive tackle, Barmore joined New England from Alabama’s 2020 undefeated CFP national-championship team in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. After playing in every game as a rookie, Barmore played in 10 in 2022 because of injuries.

In 2023, Barmore reached career highs with 64 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 16 quarterback hits and six pass breakups. He also got the first forced fumble of his career last season.

New England started its training-camp practices in preparation for the 2024 season on Wednesday.
