Family and friends rally behind Huntsville man in need of heart transplant

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The community of a Huntsville man in need of a heart transplant is spreading the word, asking for prayers and support.

Corey “Skip” Steger is a father and grandfather, and on Saturday, he was surrounded by family and friends all a part of his medical journey.

“I’m actually shocked,” Steger said. “I’m surprised. People I haven’t seen in years came out.”

Steger is a well-known face to many in Huntsville as a co-owner of Rocket City Barbershop.

“He loves his family and his community, and he’s served his community for more than 30 years now,” said Steger’s cousin Courtney Ford.

The 52-year-old was diagnosed with lupus 23 years ago.

“It’s been painful joints, rashes, something different every day,” Steger said.

He’s not facing congestive heart failure.

“Sometimes it can be overwhelming, but it’s all worth it in the long run,” said Steger’s wife Laivor Steger. “Anything to make sure he’s is taken care of, we’re going to do it. Go over and beyond.”

Loved ones gathered at the Low Profile Car Club in Huntsville on Sunday to show their support.

“Through it all, we’ve trusted in God that he would bring him out, bring him through this,” said Steger’s mother Versia Steger. “We’d just like to thank everybody too for what they’ve done and what they’re doing for him.”

The family has a GoFundMe set up to help cover Steger’s medical bills. If you are interested in contributing, click here.
