ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — Phase two of a three-part renovation for the Athens Farmers Market is now complete, according to the Executive Director of Athens Main Street Tere Richardson
Phase 2 consisted of the removal of old asphalt that had become worn. The market had received a grant to replace the old asphalt with new, porous asphalt that would be more environmentally friendly.
This is because water does not pool on top of porous asphalt, but instead, filters through it making it better for the environment.
The Athens Farmers Market credits Grayson Carter and Son Contracting and Outdoor Elegance for completing this phase.
Phase 1 involved the refurbishing of the already existing pavilion, including the addition of new handicap-accessible bathrooms, a new roof, paint and infrastructure work.
Richardson said the plan for phase 3 is to construct a new pavilion house and area to host music acts and festivals. Phase 3 will also bring three new murals to the area and new trees.
Organizers for the Athens Farmers Market said they are planning to have phase 3 completed by the end of 2024, and dedication of the market is tentative for the end of September.
