Tuscumbia woman turns 103, only living person connected to Belle Mont Mansion

TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (WHNT) — Saturday morning was a massive milestone for Charlotte Perritt as she turned 103. Perritt is considered to be the oldest living person connected to the Belle Mont Mansion in Tuscumbia.

Ninon Parker with the Belle Mont Mansion said Perritt is considered to have made history.

“She is a descendant of some of the enslaved people who built Belle Mont and worked the land here and people who served in domestic roles,” Parker said. “She has a real love of the place in her heart.”

“It feels good. It really does feel good to be here,” Perritt said.

Perritt could be seen walking around the home, reminiscing about her family members’ history, specifically her grandmother’s.

“She was the midwife. Her name was Charlotte. I was named after her,” Perritt said.

Laura-Emily Everite, site director at Belle Mont Mansion, told News 19 the history of Perritt’s grandmother.

“So Charlotte’s grandmother was a very prominent member in the Tuscumbia community,” Everite said. “She was a midwife. She was a midwife to everyone, regardless of race.”

The Belle Mont Mansion has been around for over 200 years. Perritt said she will always recount memories from her childhood days.

“I remember I always churned the milk, and then we’d take the milk and make butter, and we all would just churn it,” Perritt said.

Perritt said she will always remember and cherish the Belle Mont Mansion for the rest of her life.
